  CHAPTER 1

  MORNING ROUTINE

  It’s early morning.

  The sun is coming up.

Several clouds are in the sky.

A small group of birds are seen flying in the sky.

Phil and I are running on a sidewalk in our neighborhood.

“Let’s stop at your house,” I say to Phil as I turn the corner.

Phil catches his breath and replies, “Sounds good.”

I run towards Phil’s truck, and Phil follows me.

I sprint by Phil’s truck and then walk down the sidewalk.

I place both of my hands on the top of my head, interlock my fingers, and try to control my breathing.

My heart is racing as I take a deep breath in through my nose and exhale the air out through my mouth.

Phil collapses on to his front yard and tries to slow his breathing.

I walk over to Phil and say, “Good run today Phil.”

Phil sits up and says, “Yeah. You really started to sprint towards the end of it.”

“It just feels good to be running again. I have missed it. I’m out of shape. I think we should keep running in the mornings.”

Phil takes a deep breath and says, “I agree. It can be our morning routine.”

I help Phil up from the ground.

“You have to slow down a little. You and those damn long legs of yours,” says Phil.

“No, you need to keep up,” I joke with Phil.

Phil says, “Come inside. Let’s have a protein shake.”

I walk with Phil into his house.

Phil cleaned out Kim’s old house and made it very nice.

“What did you do with all of Kim’s pictures?”

Phil and I walk into Phil’s kitchen.

“I put them in a box. They are safe in the garage. Just in case Kim comes back for them,” says Phil.

“I wonder how they are doing? Kim and her crazy family.”

“You want chocolate or vanilla?” asks Phil.

“Vanilla. Always vanilla. The chocolate is gross.”

Phil blends up two protein shakes for us.

I walk around Phil’s house and see that Phil has the bedrooms and bathrooms all cleaned up.

  “When are they moving in?”

“Later today. I’m going to help Nicole move in later today,” says Phil.

“I wish I could help you guys, but I really have to make a supply run with Matt and Jon.”

“I understand, I’m glad you are taking Matt out of here while Nicole and the babies move out,” says Phil.

Phil hands me a cup with the protein shake in it.

“Thank you. I’m glad you guys found that nutritional store.”

“Me too. We got tons of protein powder, vitamins, supplements, and protein bars,” says Phil.

I look at Phil and say, “I gotta piss.”

  Phil replies, “TMI.”

I walk into the bathroom and take a piss.

I flush the toilet and wash my hands in the sink.

As I’m washing my hands in the sink, I look at my hair, beard, and face in the mirror.

“Man, I’m really turning gray,” I say to myself.

I exit the bathroom and walk over to Phil who is sitting on his sofa in the living room.

“I have really turned gray since the zombie apocalypse started. I need a haircut. I see more and more gray hairs in my beard and hair now, I gotta cut the gray away.”

I sit down on the sofa.

“Alright silver fox. It’s all the stress. You are turning gray from all the stress on you. You have to relax.” says Phil.

I finish my protein shake and put the cup on the living room table.

“Yeah, that’s for sure. I need a vacation.”

Phil jokes, “At least you aren’t going bald. Jon and Matt will be bald pretty soon.”

I laugh and say, “I hope to see that. I hope we all get old, bald, and gray together.”

Phil looks at the TV and says, “I wish we had television and internet.”

Phil grabs the TV remote and pushes the power button on the remote.

  The TV turns on.

For a split second, I hope to see the news or something on the screen.

The picture turns on, and the screen is filled with black and white dots.

“One day I’m going to turn the TV on and there is going to be some hot lady on the screen telling me about some news story,” says Phil.

“I hope so, that would be great.”

I stand up from the sofa and shake Phil’s hand.

“I’m out of here bro. Thank you for the shake and the run.”

  Phil says, “No problem.”

I walk towards Phil’s front door and say, “Good luck today. I think it’s great that you and Nicole are moving in together.”

“Thanks man. When are you going to show the guys the drone video Brian gave you?” asks Phil.

“I will bring it by later tonight or tomorrow. I want everyone to see the video, before we venture into St. Pete.”

I say goodbye to Phil and exit Phil’s house.

I walk down Phil’s driveway and down the street.

The sun is up now, and it’s shining down on me as I walk home.

I make my way towards the medical house where I operated on Bobby G.

I stop and look at the house.

I look at the front lawn. The lawn is overgrown except for a patch of dead grass.

I walk over to the patch of grass and look down at the brown grass.

I look up at the house and then back down at the grass.

Images of the day when Phil and I executed the two drug addicts that were staying in this house and the one man who tried to kill Bobby G come into my head.

I take a deep breath and feel a sense of appreciation that Bobby G is still alive and that we were able to turn this house into a medical house.

I walk over to the garage and open the garage door.

The garage is still full of the sports equipment, boxes, and supplies from the previous homeowners.

I see tons of boxes with the name Fisher Sports on the sides.

I open some of the boxes and see tons of brand new sports equipment. Baseball bats, hockey pads and masks, and tons of other great items are in the boxes.

I walk into the medical house through the door inside the garage.

Just stepping inside the house reminds me of when Phil and I cleared this house out and the time when we rushed Bobby G in here after he was shot.

I step into the open kitchen and look
at the living room that has been turned into a makeshift operating room. We have a bed, medical supplies, sheets, gloves, and some pillows.

I grab a pen and a piece of paper from the kitchen countertop and write myself a note.

I write on the piece of paper and say, “More medical supplies, hospital bed, stretcher, solar panels, sports equipment store, meds, and mow the lawn.”

I look at the note I just wrote myself.

I put the pen down on the kitchen countertop and start to walk towards the garage.

I pass a key hook rack that is mounted on the wall next to the door that leads into the garage.

The key hooks have several keys on them.

I stop and walk back to the key hook rack.

I look at the key hook rack and see a group of keys. Several keys are on the key hook rack, but one group of keys grabs my attention.

I grab a group of keys and look at the keys.

The group of keys are oddly shaped and don’t look to be car or house keys.

I look at the keys, smile, and say, “Thank you Fisher family. I hope your store is okay still.”

I exit the medical house and close the garage door.

I jog down the sidewalk and make it back to my house.

I enter my house, and Milo runs over to me.

Milo rubs against my left leg as I lock the front door.

Lauren hears me come in, and she rolls over in bed.

I walk into the kitchen and grab a bottle of water from the refrigerator.

I place the Fisher store keys on the kitchen counter.

Milo walks into the kitchen and sits down.

I walk by Milo and enter my master bedroom.

“Hey honey, how was your run?” asks Lauren with a half-asleep tone of voice.

“It was good. I’m going to take a shower.”

  “You stink?” jokes Lauren.

I enter my master bathroom and take a shower.

I enjoy a nice hot shower.

I exit my shower, dry off, change my clothes, and exit my bathroom.

I walk towards my master bedroom door and see that Lauren is asleep in our bed.

I quietly exit my master bedroom and enter the kitchen.

I make two bowls of oatmeal.

I let the bowls of oatmeal cool and walk back into my master bedroom.

“Honey, I made us some breakfast,” I say to Lauren.

“Thank you, I’ll be out in a second,” says Lauren.

I set the dining room table for breakfast.

Fran walks out of her bedroom and into the kitchen.

I hear Fran walk into the kitchen.

  “Morning Fran how are ya?”

Fran replies, “I’m pretty good. What’s for breakfast?”

“We don’t have much for breakfast right now. We have oatmeal and some cereal.”

“Can I have some cereal?” asks Fran.

“Sure, have whatever you want. You are welcome to everything we have.”

Lauren walks out of our master bedroom and Callie follows her.

“Morning sunshine,” says Fran to Lauren.

“You are so loud mom,” says Lauren.

Fran pours some dry cereal into a bowl.

“We don’t have any milk right now.”

Fran says, “That’s okay. This cereal is okay without milk.”

I place the bowls of oatmeal on the dining room table placemats and set a placemat for Fran to use.

Lauren gives Callie some treats in Callie’s bowl and Callie starts to eat them.

I pour Fran, Lauren, and myself each a glass of orange juice.

Fran, Lauren, and I sit down at the dining room table.

  “Where’s dad?” asks Lauren.

Fran replies, “He’s sleeping still. He won’t wake up until 10 or 11 usually.”

  “Must be rough,” jokes Lauren.

I look at Fran and say, “I found a house for you and Keith in the neighborhood. It’s right by Phil’s house and it’s in good shape.”

Fran looks at Lauren and says, “That’s nice. You don’t want ya mother around here anymore?”

Lauren replies, “You need your own place. You would be right down the street. I’ll take you and dad there later.”

“I like it here. Your house is nice,” says Fran.

“You don’t have to move out today, but I’m sure you and Keith want your own space again.”

Fran says, “I don’t know. I like being around other people also. It’s a little too much to be just around Keith all the time.”

“What about The Villages? You and dad going there?” asks Lauren.

“No way. That place is too much,” says Fran.

Lauren looks at me and asks, “What’s your plan today?”

I finish my oatmeal and say, “I’m going with Matt and Jon around town. We need a couple things, and I want to check out a couple new places.”

  “Anywhere interesting?” ask Lauren.

“I plan on going to Fisher Sporting Goods. The small sporting goods store. The medical house is the Fisher’s old house. I found some keys that I think will get us in the store.”

“That’s cool. See if they have any athletic attire for me. I need some new pants,” says Lauren.

“I will sweetie. I hope they have tons of things for us. I’m going to take my SUV and one of the electric trucks.”

  “Be safe,” says Lauren.

I exit the dining room table and walk into the kitchen.

I place my empty oatmeal bowl in the sink and then exit the kitchen.

I walk into my master bathroom and brush my teeth.

Lauren and Fran sit and talk at the dining room table.

“I’m worried about your father. He hasn’t had his insulin regularly. He needs to take that every day or at the very least every couple of days,” says Fran.

“Did he take the insulin we got from The Grove?” asks Lauren.

“Yeah. He has two left now, but that’s it,” says Fran.

I exit my master bedroom and walk over to the TV.

I grab the memory stick out of the DVD player and place it in a protective case.

I look at Lauren and ask, “Sweetie, can you check on Nicole and the babies today?”

Lauren smiles and replies, “Yeah. I love those babies. Is today moving day?”

“Yup, Phil is excited for it. Matt isn’t too happy about it. That’s why I’m taking Matt and Jon with me today.”

“I’m glad Phil finally asked her. I think it’s good for them to be together,” says Lauren.

“Yeah. It took Phil some time, but he got the nerve to ask her.”

  “How exciting,” says Lauren.

I place the memory stick next to the DVD player and walk towards my front door.

  “You leaving already?” asks Lauren.

I attach my gun holster thigh strap over my right thigh pants leg and say, “Yeah. I want to get going. We have some big places to check out today.”

I walk into my kitchen and grab the sporting goods store keys as well as my SUV keys.

I walk back towards my front door.

Lauren walks over to me and gives me a kiss.

I put on my bulletproof vest and grab my katana.

I look at Lauren and say, “I love you.”

Lauren replies, “I love you. You be careful.”

I say goodbye to Lauren and Fran as I exit my house.

I walk over to my SUV.

I place my katana in my SUV and look at Matt’s house.

I walk over to Matt’s house and knock on the front door.

Kylie opens the front door, and I enter Matt’s house.

  “Hey Kylie. How are ya?”

“I’m good. How are you?” replies Kylie.

“Doing okay. Getting ready for today. I want to check out a couple of new stores and places today.”

“Nice, Matt’s in the bathroom. He should be ready pretty soon,” says Kylie.

  “How are you feeling Kylie?”
<
br />   Kylie replies, “Overall I’m good. It’s too early for any pregnancy symptoms, I guess. I don’t know what to expect from the pregnancy actually.”

“Me either, but Nicole has to be the best source for that.”

“Yeah, I’ve been asking Nicole tons of questions. It’s a shame she’s moving out,” says Kylie.

“You don’t agree with her leaving?”

Kylie looks at her bedroom door and then back at me.

Kylie sees that no one is around and whispers, “I do. I think it’s great actually, but I know Matt isn’t happy about it.”

Matt walks out of his bedroom and into the kitchen.

Matt has a pissed off look on his face.

“Morning buddy boy. Rise and shine.”

Matt takes a drink of some orange juice and says, “Morning. Where are we going today?”

“A couple different stops. I need you or Jon to drive one of the electric trucks today.”

“I’ll drive. I like driving the electric truck,” says Matt.

“Well, okay then. Get some breakfast and meet me at my house. I’m going to Jon’s house next. Don’t take forever.”

“I’ll be over in like twenty minutes,” says Matt.

I look at Matt and say, “I’ll see ya in thirty.”

I say goodbye to Kylie and Matt and exit Matt’s house.

Several minutes go by, and I make it to Jon’s house.

I walk into Jon’s house and talk with Kelly in the kitchen.

Jon walks out from his bedroom and says hello.

I look at Kelly and ask, “If you have time today Kelly, can you check out the food houses and the medical house?”

Kelly replies, “Yeah, no problem. I’ll keep a record of our supplies in each house. What about the potential library?”

“I’ll have to get back to you about the library, but I know that I would like to start one. I haven’t decided which house is best for it yet.”

“Let me know whenever you decide. I will start with the medical and food supply homes,” says Kelly.

Jon asks, “What’s the plan for today?”

“We are going to check out a couple places. Matt is going to drive one of the electric trucks, and I’m going to drive my SUV.”

  “Sounds good,” says Jon.

“Let’s get going. You got your list?”

  Kelly laughs.

Jon smiles and says, “Yeah, smart ass. I got my list. I got some good stuff on my list.”
